El yoga tiene muchas formas, pero una sola esencia: volver al centro, calmar la mente y despertar el alma. Patanjali lo describi\u00f3 como el arte de silenciar los movimientos mentales para conectar con lo eterno en nosotras. En cambio, lo que ha llegado a Occidente se enfoca muchas veces en el cuerpo, el rendimiento o la est\u00e9tica. En ellos, define el yoga con una frase tan simple como poderosa:<\/p><blockquote data-start=\"761\" data-end=\"860\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"763\" data-end=\"860\"><strong data-start=\"763\" data-end=\"796\">\u00abYoga chitta vritti nirodhah\u00bb<\/strong><br data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"799\" \/><em data-start=\"801\" data-end=\"860\">El yoga es la detenci\u00f3n de las fluctuaciones de la mente.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p class=\"\" data-start=\"862\" data-end=\"1177\">Esta definici\u00f3n nos muestra que el objetivo del yoga no es f\u00edsico, sino <strong data-start=\"934\" data-end=\"957\">mental y espiritual<\/strong>: se trata de calmar la actividad constante del pensamiento para alcanzar un estado de conciencia pura. No se trata de hacer posturas, sino de cultivar la <strong data-start=\"1112\" data-end=\"1176\">presencia, la concentraci\u00f3n, la autodisciplina y el desapego<\/strong>.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1259\">Patanjali plantea el yoga como un camino de <strong data-start=\"1223\" data-end=\"1237\">ocho pasos<\/strong> (el \u00abashtanga yoga\u00bb):<\/p><ol data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1727\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1351\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1264\" data-end=\"1351\"><strong data-start=\"1264\" data-end=\"1273\">Yamas<\/strong> (principios \u00e9ticos: no violencia, verdad, desapego, moderaci\u00f3n, no codiciar).<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1352\" data-end=\"1441\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1355\" data-end=\"1441\"><strong data-start=\"1355\" data-end=\"1366\">Niyamas<\/strong> (disciplina personal: limpieza, contento, esfuerzo, autoestudio, entrega).<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1442\" data-end=\"1495\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1445\" data-end=\"1495\"><strong data-start=\"1445\" data-end=\"1454\">Asana<\/strong> (postura estable y c\u00f3moda para meditar).<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1496\" data-end=\"1549\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1499\" data-end=\"1549\"><strong data-start=\"1499\" data-end=\"1512\">Pranayama<\/strong> (regulaci\u00f3n consciente del aliento).<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1550\" data-end=\"1613\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1553\" data-end=\"1613\"><strong data-start=\"1553\" data-end=\"1567\">Pratyahara<\/strong> (retirada de los sentidos hacia el interior).<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1614\" data-end=\"1645\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1617\" data-end=\"1645\"><strong data-start=\"1617\" data-end=\"1628\">Dharana<\/strong> (concentraci\u00f3n).<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1673\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1649\" data-end=\"1673\"><strong data-start=\"1649\" data-end=\"1659\">Dhyana<\/strong> (meditaci\u00f3n).<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1674\" data-end=\"1727\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1677\" data-end=\"1727\"><strong data-start=\"1677\" data-end=\"1688\">Samadhi<\/strong> (estado de uni\u00f3n profunda con el Ser).<\/p><\/li><\/ol><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1729\" data-end=\"1911\">Este camino no es lineal, sino una pr\u00e1ctica constante que nos lleva a vivir de forma m\u00e1s presente, libre y en paz. Patanjali lo defini\u00f3 como el cese de las fluctuaciones de la mente, y propuso un estilo de vida basado en la \u00e9tica, la pr\u00e1ctica interior, la meditaci\u00f3n y la conexi\u00f3n con lo divino. Hoy en d\u00eda, en Occidente, el yoga ha tomado formas m\u00e1s enfocadas en lo f\u00edsico y lo terap\u00e9utico. Aunque en muchos casos se ha diluido su esencia, tambi\u00e9n es cierto que sigue siendo una puerta v\u00e1lida para volver al presente, al cuerpo y, con conciencia, a lo sagrado.
